- 43,000 (Wang and Mao 1995). Biaomin (Dongshan) has a much larger speaker population (approximately 35,700) than Jiaogong (Shikou; approximately 10,900).

- Dialects
- Dongshan (Ao Yao, Biao Mien, Biao Min, Biaomin, Byaumin, Dongshan Yao), Shikou (Chao Kong Meng, Jiaogong Mian, Tshaukongmeng). Dialects Biaomin (Dongshan) and Jiaogong (Shikou) reportedly mutually unintelligible. Quite different from and unintelligible with Biao Mon [bmt] (Biaoman). Lexical similarity: 70% with Iu Mien [ium], 67% with Kim Mun [mji], 58% with Dzao Min [bpn].
